Scientists in the US have announced that their preclinical studies in human cells and animals (rodents) have shown that cannabidiol, one of the main active substances in cannabis and marijuana, "brakes" the proliferation of the coronavirus at an early stage of infection, shortly after its entry into cells. Also, an additional study of data on 1,212 people showed that those people who had a history of using cannabis for medical reasons (treatment of epilepsy) had a significantly lower rate of Covid-19 infection.

Rosner said, "Cannabidiol has anti-inflammatory properties, so we thought that maybe it could stop the second phase of the Covid-19 infection that involves the immune system, the so-called cytokine storm. Unexpectedly, however, we saw that it can directly inhibit the reproduction of the coronavirus inside the cells of the lungs. We just wanted to know if cannabidiol would affect the immune system. "No sane person would have ever imagined that this substance would block the reproduction of the virus itself, but that's exactly what it did."
